Gendai Games Gets Funding

Austin-based Gendai Games, the iPhone game creation software firm headed by Michael Agustin, said today that it has raised a round of funding somewhere north of $1M. The funding was led by DFJ Mercury, and also included Steamboat Ventures, DFJ Frontier, and ff Asset Management. Individual investors Paige Craig, Paul Bricalt, Tom McInerney, Josh Resnick, and Mark Suster also were involved in the funding. Gendai develops software which makes it easier for non-programmers to create videogames for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. Agustin said in an interview that the funding will go towards more marketing for the firm, as well as to expand the company's team. The firm also recently has expanded its team to Los Angeles, where Agustin is now based, in addition to the team in Austin. Agustin said that GameSalad is now at 70,000 downloads, and in the last nine months has had more than 800 games published to the iTunes App store, roughly 1 percent of the games on the store.
