Dell to Cut at Least 8,800 More Jobs, Close Plant

Computer manufacturer Dell Inc. announced Monday that it will continue its system-wide cost-cutting measures for the next fiscal year and beyond. The company, which laid off some 3,200 employees during the last nine months of its 2008 fiscal year, said it plans to axe at least 8,800 more jobs worldwide. Additionally, Dell said it will close its desktop manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. The Round Rock, Texas-based company noted that it expects the layoffs, closings and other expense-slashing measures to save some $3 billion over the next three years. The net effect, Dell added, should restore competitive advantage to its operating model and improve profitability and cash flow.
