Venture Deals In Texas Drop In Q4 To $196.1M

Venture capital investments in Texas dropped in Q4 of 2012, according to the latest MoneyTree Report by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), with 33 deals totaling $196.152M during the quarter, down from 41 deals and $331.7M invested in Q4 of 2011. Nationally, venture capitalists invested $6.4 billion across 968 companies nationwide, a 3 percent drop in dllars but a 5 percent increase in volume over the prior quarter. Austin's Calxeda, the developer of low power server chips, was among the biggest fundings nationally in the quarter, with a $55.0M funding round from Austin Ventures, ,Battery Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, Highland Capital Partners,TI Ventures, and Vulcan Capital.

Nationally, compared to Q4 of 2011, where $7.38 billion was invested across 968 deals, total dollars invested were actually down about a billion dollars. PwC and the NVCA said that the top sector for investments in Q4 was software, with $2.1 billion going into 368 companies.
