Sparefoot Picks Scholarship Winner

Austin-based Sparefoot has selected a winner of the startup's $5,000 scholarship, saying last night that it has awarded the scholarsihp to Joyce Kim, a student studying abroad in Valparaiso, Chile. The company said it received 89 applications for its scholarship, which it announced in March. Kim wins $5,000, plus free self storage, for being selected. Sparefoot said applications came from all over the world, including Pakistan, China, Ghana, Tunisia and India. Kim learned about the scholarship from her school's study abroad Facebook page. The selection is particularly appropriate for Sparefoot, which itself was spawned out of the study abroad program; co-founder and CEO Chuck Gordon came up with the idea for Sparefoot after struggling himself to find a place to put his stuff before heading to study abroad in Singapore.
