SoftLayer Adds Data Transfer Service

Dallas-based SoftLayer Technologies, taking a cue from cloud computing provider Amazon.com, said today that it has added a new Data Transfer service which will allow customers to import data to computing units hosted by the firm, using USB-compatible devices. According to SoftLayer, the new service allows customers to send in USB hard drives, CDs, or DVDs to transfer data to SoftLayer, at no additional charge to users. The service is very similar to a recently announced program from Amazon.com, which allows users to transfer data directly from a USB hard drive to that firm's cloud computing services. In both cases, the service helps users overcome limitations with network bandwidth and resources, and also helps when companies have data they do not want to transmit over a network.
