Dell Turns To Bamboo Packaging

Round Rock-based Dell said Tuesday that the firm is turning to bamboo, in an effort to improve the sustainability of its packaging materials. Dell said it has started shipping Dell Inspiron Mini 10 and Mini 10v netbooks in packaging made from bamboo, instead of paper made from molded paper pulp, foams and corrugate often used in packaging. Dell said bamboo is easier on the environment, and more sustainable than paper, foam, and corrugated packaging. The firm said it plans to expand its use of the material to more of its products early next year. The move to bamboo packaging is a part of an effort to reduce its packaging volume by 10 percent, increase recycled content in packaging by 40 percent, and increase the amount of materials used that are curbside recyclable by 75 percent.
