Cirrus Logic Backs New Apple Headset Effort With Development Kit

Austin-based Cirrus Logic is getting behind the move by Apple towards wireless headsets, saying on Wednesday that it has released a new, MFi Headset Development Kit, which will allow OEMs to quicklky design new Lightning-based digital headsets. The development kit--which is only available to Apple MFi licensees--includes a full reference design for a Lightning headset. Apple's move towards digital headsets further extends its proprietary interfaces into the realm of audio headsets, which until recently have been a fairly standard, interchangeable accessory. Despite that move, Cirrus--as Apple's primary technology provider in the move--is bound to benefit greatly from the relationship. Apple is expected to roll out the digital headsets with its iPhone 7.
