American Airlines Switches In-Flight WiFi To ViaSat

Fort Worth-based American Airlines said it has selected satellite provider Viasat, to provider in-flight Internet access on its new fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, the company said on Friday. The move shakes up a longstanding agreement American Airlines had with in-flight internet provider Gogo, and has been causing ripples in the satellite Internet market. ViaSat recently deployed a Ku-band, satellite network, which offers much faster speed versus Gogo's land-based tower network. American and Gogo had been locked in a battle in the courts over their existing exclusivity agreements, which American wanted to nullify after the appearance of the far faster ViaSat service.
