Freescale Rolls Out Tablet, Smartphone Processors
Austin-based Freescale Semiconductor said this morning that it has rolled out a line of processors specifically targeted at the tablet, smartphone, electronic book reader, and automotive infotainment markets. According to Freescale, it has launched the i.MX 6 series, a set of quad-, dual-, and single-core processors designed specifically for those markets. Freescale said the processors--which use 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores--are up to five times faster than the firm's existing line of application processors. The firm said the processors are aimed at such applications as 3D video playback, desktop-quality gaming, augmented reality applications and content creation capabilities on mobile devices.
