Dallas-based AdaptiveMobile, a provider of network-based, security products aimed at mobile operators, released a report this week saying that the new frontier for spam is increasingly becoming SMS. AdaptiveMobile said it found that lucrative mobile advertising is causing the same groups who unleashed email scams earlier in the decade to turn instead to sending out SMS, ranging from weight loss programs, loans, lottery campaigns, and gift card offers. The company said the reason for the surge in SMS spam comes as a result of the low cost of sending text messages, and easy availability of mobile numbers online. AdaptiveMobile provides security tools used to help filter out that spam, which it offers to operators.
